A história do garoto Leon foi contada pelo programa Evening News, da emissora CBS nos Estados Unidos. Leon teve um problema de formação quando ainda estava no útero. Isso fez com que o garoto nascesse com a mão esquerda atrofiada.
Como não tinha condições de comprar uma prótese, Paul resolveu criar sozinho uma mão biônica para seu filho a partir de instruções e designs de vídeos no YouTube. A mão biônica saiu mais barata do que as próteses tradicionais, que podem chegar a 30 mil dólares. Além disso, conforme Leon crescer, a mão poderá ser reimpressa.
A mão biônica funciona a partir de movimentos feitos no pulso do Leon. O garoto pode levantar ou abaixar o pulso para a prótese abrir ou fechar, permitindo que ele segure objetos, como uma caneta, e até mesmo ande de bicicleta.

recursos financeiros suficientes para comprar uma mão biónica. Em vez disso, o
pai optou por utilizar a impressora 3D da escola do filho e criar a sua própria
prótese.
Mas chegar a este resultado não foi fácil. Paul McCarthy pesquisou durante dois anos sobre a melhor maneira de desenvolver este projeto, mas sem resultados. Até que, um dia, este pai encontrou um vídeo na internet onde o inventor Ivan Owen revelava que tinha usado uma impressora 3D para fazer uma mão biónica a uma criança de cinco anos.
Com a ajuda deste vídeo, Paul conseguiu finalmente construir uma mão biónica, que melhoraria o dia-a-dia do filho de 12 anos.
«Hoje em dia consigo fazer coisas que nunca pensei que fosse possível», revelou Leon à CBS.
Graças à coragem do pai, Leon pode finalmente andar de bicicleta, fazer desenhos, realizar as mais banais tarefas do quotidiano.
