Videogames podem beneficiar crianças com paralisia cerebral/Videogames may benefit children with cerebral palsy

It is estimated that for developed countries the disease affects 2.5 per thousand individuals . There are no official statistics on the incidence in Brazil . However, it is known that the number of occurrences can be considered high.
The positive effects were seen in so-called " active games " that have facilities to enable user interaction with the game through movements . Object of work - - examples are the Nintendo Wii . , Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 The boys and girls who were tested showed improvements in motor coordination , cognitive , concentration and cardiorespiratory fitness .
The researchers found that certain games like Wii Boxing or Dance Dance Revolution ( DDR ) , are a good choice to stimulate and train the fast movements of the wrist. It was also found that children with hemiplegia , a form of cerebral palsy that impairs one of the body halves , used both arms to overcome the challenges of the games . They said they also feel very motivated with activity.
" Active video games ( AVG ) are a low cost option , commercially available , and can be used to address specific therapeutic objects ," says the researcher from the University of Toronto Biddissda Elaine , one of those responsible for the work .
According to her , the results offer a promising opportunity for the development of new techniques for physical rehabilitation , where patients can experience the benefits of treatment without leaving home .Tags : respiratory fitness , coordination , hemiplegia , gaming , mobility , cerebral palsy treatment

Alzheimer

Blood test can identify Alzheimer's diseaseJornal do Braziladvertising
Alzheimer's disease is expected to triple by 2050 , affecting 115 million people worldwide. There is no cure or treatment yet for the neurodegenerative condition, but many doctors and scientists say that drugs have failed so far will work if applied early, a strategy that requires diagnosis of the disease before symptoms develop . Now , a research team has discovered a group of molecules in the blood that they say can predict with 90 % accuracy whether older people will develop the disease over 2-3 years. Although this test is not ready for general use , the technique could help recruit people who are at higher risk of developing Alzheimer's disease , and indicate the possible treatments , is reporting an issue of the journal Science this week .
Besides analyzing the autopsy of a person's brain, there are two accepted methods of diagnosing Alzheimer's disease , says Douglas Galasko , a neuroscientist at the University of California ( UC ) , San Diego , School of Medicine. One such technique is to scan the brain, which show images to detect the plaques and tangles characteristic of proteins in the brain tissue that characterize the disorder . Other techniques measure the levels of these proteins by extracting fluid from the spinal cord. Few people want to undergo this painful procedure because both techniques are expensive and not very accurate , especially in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease , researchers have spent decades searching for a blood -based test, which is less invasive and more affordable . So far these efforts have achieved "success " , says Galasko .
To find molecules in the blood that may signal the onset of Alzheimer's disease in older people , a team of Georgetown University and several other institutions , recruited seniors 70 years and older , retirement communities in New York and California. They took blood samples and sent to a lab with a mass spectrometer in order to accurately quantify the chemical composition of the blood samples of the elderly .
The article says that over three years , researchers tracked the mental health of older people and identified 53 people with mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's disease , 18 of whom had not displayed any symptoms at baseline . When he was 3 years old , they went back to analyze blood samples and compared with samples of individuals who developed the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease , with 53 subjects in the group that remained healthy . In the group whose mental health had declined , there were significant changes in blood levels of 10 different chemicals , including fatty molecules called phospholipids , which help maintain cell membranes in the brain and body intact .
To verify that their comments were not just a random event , the team tested whether it altered pattern could predict if 41 other seniors from the same communities had developed Alzheimer's disease , and found that it peaked at 90 % of the time . Despite these encouraging results , Howard Federoff , a neuroscientist at Georgetown University in Washington , DC , says the test needs further validation. " This is a new observation , it must be extended and replicated in an independent group of individuals . "
Others are equally cautious . " We do not know whether it will be a big deal or not " until other groups to replicate the study , agrees Michael Weiner , a neuroscientist at the University of California , San Francisco . The population of people with Alzheimer's disease is so diverse , that are fraught with health problems , which may reveal that although the test is good at detecting people who are at risk , he will discover many other conditions in which the process will be helpful as a diagnostic tool. If this is the case , the test can still be used to screen people for prevention trials of drugs for Alzheimer's disease, he says.

Glasses that detect cancer cells to illuminate bad surgeons .Produced by the University of Washington , the glasses are able to differentiate cancer cells and facilitate the complete removal of the affected areas .Cancer surgery is tricky . Even with powerful microscopes , surgeons have great difficulty in distinguishing between healthy cells and cancerous cells . But with these new glasses developed at the University of Washington , everything can change .For simplicity, the glasses make cancer cells glow blue when the patient receives an injection of a special dye that targets these cells . Because cancer is notoriously difficult to detect , it is not uncommon that patients require a second surgery to remove cells that were overlooked the first time . Doctors hope that the glasses work it . " Imagine what it would mean if these glasses eliminate the need for further surgery and pains associated , besides the inconvenience and anxiety ," said Dr. Julie Margenthaler , University of Washington .Vision is not the only sense that scientists hope will help to resolve the issue of the second surgery. Last year , Dr. Zoltan Takats invented iKnife system - essentially a sophisticated knife equipped with a spectrometer which literally sniffs out cancer cells . The glasses are still very new , and even given a name , but iKnife system is already being used in the UK . When we are talking about the fight against cancer , anything can help.

PESQUISA SOBRE O AVC//RESEARCH ON THE AVC

They should therefore be attentive to blood pressure, according to new recommendations from the American Heart Association. Women also have higher risk factors that favor brain injuries , such as migraines , depression , diabetes, and cardiac arrhythmia .Strokes are the third leading cause of death among women , after heart disease and cancer , which is the fifth leading cause of death in men .Women have specific due to pregnancy and the use of hormones risks, such as the contraceptive pill , says Cheryl Bushnell , associate professor of neurology at Wake Forest Medical Center in Winston - Salem (North Carolina , USA ) . He chairs the expert group that drafted the recommendations published in the medical journal Stroke. The new guide reminds the importance of regular blood pressure control , especially in young women , before taking contraceptives and become pregnant .Symptoms of a stroke in women are similar to men : sudden numbness or weakness of the arm , difficulty speaking or understanding what others say .According to the study authors , the symptoms of a stroke in women may be more subtle , since they have more difficulties in expressing themselves or be aware of your environment .A stroke occurs when an artery to the brain is blocked by a clot, causing the destruction of brain tissue .

Without this sensitivity , we would venture to employ excessive force , and kneading a plastic cup , for example, or less force , and leave a glass shatter on the floor. The machine , created from a collaboration between scientists from Italy , Switzerland , Germany , England and Denmark institutions , submit information captured by sensors installed in the finger tips of the prosthesis directly to the peripheral nerves of the patient." For the first time , we managed to restore sensory capacity in real time on an amputee , while he controlled this ' sensorizada ' hand," says researcher Silvestro Micera , one of the leaders of the research. The study was published in the journal " Science Translational Medicine ."...

Volunteer makes battery of tests to test touchartificial ( Photo: LifeHand 2/Patrizia Tocci )experimentScientists have estimated a model of the prosthesis already on the market , in which the patient is able to control the movements of the artificial hand by electrical stimuli emitted from the effort exerted by the remaining muscles . Captured by the prosthesis , these stimuli control the opening and closing movements of the fingers or rotate the wrist.Electrodes were implanted directly in two nerves of the patient. Sensors installed in the artificial hand detect the level of force he exerts while holding an object . This information is decoded by software and sent to the shaped electrodes that can be interpreted by nerves electrical signals . Thus , the patient is able to control its strength in real time to suit the characteristics of the object .For medical Alvaro Baik Cho , Group Hand and Reconstructive Surgery , Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Hospital das Clinicas, Faculty of Medicine, USP , the breakthrough of this technique is to make a direct interface between the device and the nerves of the patient. " Thus , it creates an artificial sensitivity . It's what I 've seen of the closest to a normal sensitivity to the amputee , is actually a very innovative thing , " he says. The method was tested on a single patient : the Danish Aabo Dennis Sørensen , who lost her left hand 9 years ago in an accident involving fireworks. While conducting over 700 tests, it proved able to feel the shape of objects and their consistency. " The feedback was totally new to me , and suddenly , while I was going through the motions , I could feel what I was doing , instead of just looking at what I was doing ," says the patient .For Cho , should still take a few years until this new tool available on the market . First , the experiment should be repeated on a larger patient group . Then there must be a technological breakthrough that allows the tool to become portable . The device that decodes the signals received by the sensors is still big and heavy.rudimentary touchA technology developed earlier is now able to provide the amputee some similar signs to the touch , but the most rudimentary way . It is oriented muscle reinnervation ( TMR , its acronym in English ) . Cho explains that through the replantation of amputated nerves on the chest muscles member , you can feel a response to the pressure exerted by the prosthesis chest . However, this technique does not allow the patient to have a response of the power modulation to the stimulus in real time.

APLICATIVO PARA CHAMADAS DA SAMU---application to call the SAMU

30 / 01 at 17h43Application will allow calls to Samu by smartphoneBrazil AgencyadvertisingThe Ministry of Health took the Campus Party to launch the E- SUS Samu application that will allow users from all over Brazil to make their requests for service through smartphones . The system is integrated with Facebook and uses data available on the social network to facilitate access to information such as gender, age , location , and other data that the user can put in the application itself, such as joining a health plan or predisposition donate organs .The Health Minister , Alexandre Padilha , was at the event and launched the campuseiros a challenge : meet, share and improve the E- SUS Samu . The minister also announced for the second half of 2014 at a premium toward developing information technologies that can contribute to the management of public health in the country .From the moment the user activates the emergency button on the application, a notification is sent to the person indicated by the user as first contact , then - depending on the permissions set - the call may be published in the wall of the patient. The system then sends the data to the call center and passes the call to the 192 , so that information about the health status of the user is informed .Integrated with Waze app, which focuses on traffic data , such as accidents , detours , congestion , supplied by the users of the service maps the E- SUS Samu intends thereby decrease the time of arrival of the ambulance.
