Cirurgia de câncer é complicada. Mesmo com microscópios poderosos, cirurgiões têm muita dificuldade ao distinguir células saudáveis e células cancerígenas. Mas com estes novos óculos desenvolvidos na Universidade de Washington, tudo pode mudar.
Para simplificar, os óculos fazem as células cancerígenas brilharem em azul após o paciente receber uma injeção de um corante especial que tem como alvo essas células. Como o câncer é notoriamente difícil de ser detectado, não é incomum que pacientes precisem de uma segunda cirurgia para eliminar células que foram esquecidas na primeira vez. Médicos esperam que os óculos resolvam isso. “Imagina o que significaria se esses óculos eliminassem a necessidade de novas cirurgias e as dores associadas, além da inconveniência e ansiedade”, explicou a Doutora Julie Margenthaler, da Universidade de Washington.
A visão não é o único sentido que cientistas esperam que ajudem a resolver a questão da segunda cirurgia. No ano passado, o Doutor Zoltan Takats inventou o sistema iKnife – essencialmente, um bisturi sofisticado equipado com um espectrômetro que literalmente fareja células cancerígenas. Os óculos ainda são muito novos e sequer receberam um nome, mas o sistema iKnife já está sendo usado no Reino Unido. Quando estamos falando do combate ao câncer, qualquer coisa pode ajudar.

Doctors hope that the glasses work it . " Imagine what it would mean if these glasses eliminate the need for further surgery and pains associated , besides the inconvenience and anxiety ," said Dr. Julie Margenthaler , University of Washington .Vision is not the only sense that scientists hope will help to resolve the issue of the second surgery. Last year , Dr. Zoltan Takats invented iKnife system - essentially a sophisticated knife equipped with a spectrometer which literally sniffs out cancer cells . The glasses are still very new , and even given a name , but iKnife system is already being used in the UK . When we are talking about the fight against cancer , anything can help.
